Fall River EMS

The history of EMS in Wisconsin started in the early 1970s.  Prior to that, EMS was typically provided by funeral homes.  In 1974, training became mandatory and state approval was required to provide ambulance transport and care.  Requirements were also put into place mandating that EMS care and transport be available to every Wisconsin township and resident.  By now, Wisconsin had almost 4500 licensed EMTs .

Today, Wisconsin has @ 450 ambulance services with over 16,000 licensed EMTs.  Each year Wisconsin gains @ 1000 EMTs and loses @ 1000 EMTs.  So, this number has remained consistent over the last 15 years.

The EMT-Basic is the backbone of EMS in Wisconsin and provides the largest level of care.  To become an EMT-Basic, you attend class for 140 hours of instruction, found at most local technical colleges.  The education consists of classroom instruction and hands on training provided through your local emergency room.

Classroom training includes basic anatomy and physiology, medical illnesses, injuries and their treatments.  EMT-Basics are trained to provide oxygen, aspirin, atrovent, epinephrine and glucagon.  They may also test blood sugar.  After the initial training, every EMT must complete 30 hours of training every 2 years to maintain their license.
